How Old Is It?
If something is well within its expected lifespan, repair is usually the smart money. Near the end of it, replacement starts to win.

The line we draw is water and sag: drywall that's been soaked, is crumbling, or is bowing has lost its integrity and should be cut out and replaced rather than skim-coated over.
